Alice
Project 1
Alice’s Project 1 was created in response to the starting point ‘Identity’, to which she gave the personal subtitle ‘The Girl I Am Becoming’. She wanted to explore the idea that women and girls can often feel pressure to hide parts of themselves in order to conform to societal expectations, rather than showing their true colours and expressing themselves freely. Throughout the project, Alice explored different ways of communicating this idea through portraiture, experimenting with bright colour, expressive mark-making and a range of mixed media. As her ideas developed, she considered how colour, composition and symbolism could be used to represent individuality and self-expression. This culminated in a series of bold, expressive mixed-media collages, rich in colour and symbolism, that celebrate the freedom to reveal and embrace her own true, authentic identity.
“I believe many girls and women restrict and reshape themselves to fit societies norms and beauty standards. Through my project I hoped to explore this looking at self-identity. Repeated eyes, texture, and vibrant colour allowed me to communicate feelings of judgement, restriction, and authenticity”
Project 2
Alice’s Project 2 was created in response to the starting point ‘Connection’, beginning with an exploration of the different things we connect with as human beings. She chose to focus on our connection with nature, initially exploring a variety of natural forms before refining her focus to flowers. Throughout the project, Alice developed her drawing and painting skills alongside her own photography of flowers, experimenting with different ways to capture and represent their forms. Inspired by her research into three-dimensional art, she then developed her ideas beyond two-dimensional imagery, designing and creating a final piece that represented the connection between humans and nature. Her final outcome featured imagery of hands linked by colourful strings to flowers, visually symbolising this relationship.
“I believe that although humans are inherently connected to the natural world, this relationship is gradually weakening due to the increasing dominance of technology. My intention was to highlight both the beauty of nature and the importance of reconnecting with it through visual art”
