Amelia
Project 1
Amelia’s Project 1 was created in response to her chosen starting point, ‘Colour and Mood’, through which she explored different ways of conveying emotion and atmosphere within landscape imagery. She researched a range of artists and visited art galleries to help develop her ideas, focusing particularly on how colour and mark-making can be used to create a sense of mood across painting, drawing and collage. Amelia was particularly inspired by the work of David Hockney and his bold, colourful and simplified landscapes, often created across multiple panels on a large scale. Drawing on this influence, alongside her own photographs taken during her travels, Amelia experimented with dividing landscape compositions into sections and exploring how colour could be used expressively within each. These ideas developed into a series of larger-scale paintings created on stretched canvas.
“I developed my work through exploring colour and experimenting with scale and surface. The juxtaposition of bright and greyscale, how they match each other and convey different meanings. ”
Project 2
Amelia’s Project 2 was created in response to the starting point ‘Connections’. Following some initial exploration of colour, she chose to focus on the powerful human connection to music and the emotions it can evoke. She researched a range of artists who have responded to music in different ways, exploring how abstraction, shape, colour and movement can be used to visually represent sound, as well as investigating automated approaches to painting in response to music. As her project developed, Amelia broadened her research by looking at musicians and attending live music concerts, using these experiences to inform and inspire her ideas. Throughout the project, she experimented with a wide range of media, materials and techniques, including the incorporation of typography. These explorations ultimately culminated in her final piece, which Amelia describes as ‘representing the amazing mix of emotion and connection that music gives us’.
“My biggest inspiration was Mika, a musician who writes, sings, tells stories and plays piano. Mika portrays the feelings of aliveness, energy, joy, anger, pain, sadness, loneliness and more. Experiencing his live music concert was a source of first-hand inspiration for my project”
