Project 1

Desi’s Project 1 was created in response to the starting point ‘Fiction’, drawing inspiration from fictional narratives and, in particular, the characters and stories behind Star Wars. She researched the work of Dave Filoni, a director, filmmaker and animator who has worked behind the creations of Avatar and Star Wars, becoming particularly interested in his development of the character Ahsoka. This research led Desi to explore Ahsoka through a range of media and techniques, with a growing focus on how light and colour could impact her drawing and painting. As the project progressed, she experimented with combining secondary-sourced imagery from films with her own original imagery, as well as layering and combining different media to create new compositions. Desi gradually increased the scale and complexity of her work, refining both her technical skills and compositional choices. The project culminated in a series of highly detailed A2 and A1 pencil drawings, combined with painted backgrounds.

“I specialise in drawing fictional characters/alien creatures and wanted to focus my project on my interests like Star Wars. I took inspiration from a variety of sources, including the work of Dave Fioloni who created a Star Wars character for screen”

Project 2

Desi’s Project 2 was created in response to the starting point ‘Woman’, through which she explored what it means and feels like to be a young woman in today’s world. Inspired by the work of artist Arghavan Khosravi, Desi experimented with creating complex, multi-layered artworks that combined imagery, symbolism and meaning. She undertook extensive research into the use of symbolism within feminist art, using this to develop her own carefully constructed compositions incorporating a range of symbolic objects and imagery. Every element of Desi’s work was thoughtfully considered, with the choice of colour, media, imagery and arrangement each carrying its own significance and contributing to the wider meaning of the composition.

“At first, I tried to explore women’s looks and gender stereotypes. But as I explored more, I started to think about the difference between internal thoughts and external appearances. I wanted to represent girl’s hidden grief and pain”
