Project 1

Pasco’s Project 1 was created in response to his own chosen starting point of ‘Natural’, inspired by his interest in nature and the beauty of the natural world around us. Throughout the project, he experimented confidently with a wide variety of media, materials and techniques, often combining these in interesting and unexpected ways. After initially exploring collage, he began to investigate abstraction and how natural imagery could be simplified into basic shapes, colours and forms. Through this process, Pasco discovered that by removing some of the recognisable detail from an image, attention could instead be drawn to the beautiful colours, textures and patterns found within nature. This discovery led Pasco to create a series of highly effective abstract drawings, paintings and collages, experimenting with different ways of arranging and composing his simplified natural forms. His ideas then developed beyond two dimensions as he translated these shapes into a series of three-dimensional sculptures. For his final piece, Pasco returned his artwork to the natural environment itself, creating an interesting contrast between the intricate detail and complexity of real nature and the simplified, abstracted forms within his own work.

“I looked at the work of Henry Moore, who creates abstract sculptures of people with hollow spaces. People often interpret the form of his reclining figures as representing the landscape and hills of Yorkshire. This inspired me to think about how I could use my landscape shapes to create sculptures ”

Project 2

Pasco’s Project 2 was created in response to the starting point ‘Layers’, where he chose to continue his exploration of nature while introducing the technique of weaving. Throughout the project, Pasco experimented with weaving in a variety of ways, working with different materials, techniques and scales to explore the possibilities of the process. Building upon his understanding of abstraction developed through his Project 1, Pasco used his own first-hand photography of natural forms and landscapes as the starting point for his compositions. He simplified this imagery into bold shapes and areas of bright colour, translating elements of the natural world into increasingly abstract designs. As his ideas developed, he also experimented with incorporating text into some of his compositions, adding another visual layer to his work.

“I chose this theme because I enjoy collage and creating 3D effects within my art. The artists I researched helped me improve by considering how different materials work together and the use of colour”
